The swastika represents a lot of things in many different cultures and is a well respected and commonly used symbol world-wide. That is, until the Nazis used it and ruined it.

End of the 2nd century beggining of the 3rd.Place and particular unit is not possible to tell from what is visible in the painting.Basic source are finds from this era.Everything you see was found or is known from contemporary art(but majority what you see are actuall archeological findings). His shield is made acording preserved exemplar(including its decoration)from Syria and original was used here in action at the middle of 3rd century.Aathor is Nikolai Zubkov.

These are roman soldiers from the late 2nd century around 200 a.d. The shield design was found in Dura-Europos.
